Wanted: 10,000 Amateur Astronomers...

Physics arXiv
"ABSTRACT: Totality during the solar eclipse of 2017 traverses the entire breadth of the continental United States, from Oregon to South Carolina. It thus provides the opportunity to assemble a very large number of images, obtained by amateur observers all along the path, into a continuous record of coronal evolution in time; totality lasts for an hour and a half over the continental U.S. While we describe this event here as an opportunity for public education and outreach, such a movie – with very high time resolution and extending to the chromosphere – will also contain unprecedented information about the physics of the solar corona.

The project is to make a megamovie (not with your smiling face, unfortunately) of the solar eclipse that will cross the US in 2017. This is an outreach project that I can envision coordinated by university astrophysics departments and local high schools offering physics, or astronomy as an alternate science credit. They also seek to repeat Eddington's experiment that proved in Einstein's Relativity, gravity would bend light, similar in concept to Gravitational Lensing.

Of course, this also means you probably don't believe the world will end December 21, 2012. Hm...they might consider that as one of the prerequisites.
