I remember this a little differently...as in it TRULY interrupted my cartoons the day before (Saturday)! But, after my father explained its significance to me, I could not complain. And I could not look away.
I became a "US Sputnik child." Science from that amazing point in time fascinated me, and still does obviously to this day.
Maybe this fanciful take of alternate history will light a spark in the 21st Century...and not feed "conspiracy theories."
