Watson's Grandfather...

LA Times: John McCarthy, 1966 pioneer of A.I.

LA TIMES Science: "In the mid-1950s mathematician John McCarthy issued a call for research on "Automata Studies," but the phrase was so bland that few people understood what he meant. So he came up with a more provocative description of the idea he was promoting.

"He called it artificial intelligence.

"McCarthy, who died at his home in Stanford on Monday at 84, became known as the father of artificial intelligence for his seminal role in defining the field devoted to the development of intelligent machines."

This is a remarkable story. It shows the strength of character of a single-minded person, and the power of education. He also created Lisp, the basis of robotics programming, Internet applications and computer chess programs. In essence (my opinion only), he was the grandfather of Watson.
