Nanotechnology and Society...
Some of the fascinating promise of this technology: detecting cancer cells at earlier stages, thereby extending life and survival rates in patients; detecting spoilage in fish (an application probably useful in the Gulf Oil Spill Disaster), detectors-on-a-chip. With vision, we could prepare ourselves and manufacture this technology HERE, employing citizens and raising the standards of living, much like the industrial revolution and the manufacturing boom after the end of WWII:
