The "First Small Step" of Freedom 7...

We forget sometimes that space launches didn't used to be so routine; that the cowboy "swagger" of Star Trek was inspired by the adventurous nature of the times. Gene Roddenberry literally referred to it as "a wagon train to the stars."

We forget that rocket launches is not a trivial physics: we put the lives of our fellow humans at risk for the sake of exploration, of knowing what we did not know before. That takes a special kind of person, evident in their research as scientists, military carerrs and other factors that define their lives. They are a special breed of humanity.

We've forgotten a nostalgia; a time when our heroes were not overcompensated sports figures, nor so-called "reality TV" personalities or entertainers; but scientists, engineers, pilots and explorers...in space suits.
