As NASA concludes the Space Shuttle era, SpaceX will move to make spaceflight a "commodity."
SpaceX could become the equivalent to ex-NASA and astronaut personnel as defense contractors are that employ ex-military (especially Special Forces personnel).
I'm assuming NASA will still be involved in manned space flight and training candidates, but will the safeguards be translated from a government agency to a "for profit" corporation?
Some novice civilians (say, physics or chemistry postdocs) and ex-astronauts will step forward, especially if the pay is equivalent and the risk is nominal.
"Nominal" risk is almost cliche, considering we got to the moon...with a slide rule.
